International Students F-1 procedure
Most students are issued with an F-1 visa, and the general outline/process flow for obtaining an F1 visa is as follows:
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION WILL BE 5 WEEKS AHEAD OF THE TERM START DATE.
Regulations require all prospective F-1 students to pay the I-901 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) Fee before the U.S. Department of State issues you a visa. ( https://www.fmjfee.com/i901fee/index.html )
After you receive your UEWM I-20, pay the mandatory, one-time SEVIS I-901 Fee online before you schedule your F-1 visa interview. Print a copy of your payment confirmation to present to the visa officer during your F-1 visa interview and when entering the U.S.
When to Arrive
You may enter the U.S. in initial F-1 up to 30 days before the program start date on your I-20. While you may be aware of students successfully entering the U.S. more than 30 days in advance, we urge you not to attempt this. The inspectors at U.S. ports of entry have the authority to refuse you entry to the U.S., which means you would not be able to leave the airport and would have to return to your home country at your own expense.
Regardless of where you enter the U.S., be prepared to provide the following documents at the port of entry to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer. NOTE: CBP inspection takes place before you collect your luggage, so you must have these documents on your person. Do not put your travel documents in your checked luggage.
I. Passport (valid for at least 6 months into the future)
II. Visa stamp (does not apply to Canadian citizens)
III. SEVIS Form I-20 (F-1) of UEWM
IV. SEVIS fee receipt
V. Supporting financial documentation
